Car AC not cooling in Bengaluru

A car air conditioner that has stopped cooling properly gives you a clue before anyone opens the bonnet: when it fails tells you what kind of fault it is. Here is how to read that, and what usually turns out to be wrong.

The short version

What to take away

  • Cold in the morning and warm by afternoon usually points at the condenser and airflow, not at low refrigerant.
  • Weak from the moment you start the car is the pattern that fits low refrigerant.
  • Check the cabin filter first. It is the cheapest cause and the most commonly skipped.
  • If the refrigerant is genuinely low, it leaked. Refilling without finding the leak pays for the same repair twice.

We service and repair cars in Bengaluru — at your home or office, or at our workshop when the job needs a lift. Open 24 hours, every day.

No price is listed anywhere on this site because it depends on your car and the parts chosen. You get an itemised quote before any work starts.

The pattern is the diagnosis

If the air conditioning is cold when you set off in the morning and has weakened noticeably by early afternoon, that pattern usually points at the condenser — the radiator-like part at the front of the car that sheds the heat the system has taken out of the cabin. In slow traffic and high heat, it cannot shed enough, and cooling falls away. A condenser that is clogged with dust, leaves or insects behaves the same way, and Bengaluru traffic is hard on it.

If instead it is weak from the moment you start the car, and stays weak, that is the pattern that fits a system low on refrigerant — or a compressor that is not engaging, or a blend door or electrical fault. Same symptom, different repair.

Why this matters before you spend anything. The two patterns lead to different work. Topping up refrigerant on a car whose condenser is clogged costs money and changes nothing, and that is a common outcome when nobody asks when the cooling fails.

Start with the cabin filter

Before anything else, check the cabin air filter — sometimes called the pollen filter. It sits behind the glovebox on most cars and it filters the air passing over the evaporator. When it is clogged, airflow drops and cooling drops with it, even though the refrigerant is perfectly fine.

In a city with Bengaluru's dust, it loads up faster than most service schedules assume. It is a cheap part and a quick job, and it is the first thing worth ruling out.

If the refrigerant is low, it went somewhere

A car air-conditioning system is sealed. It does not consume refrigerant the way an engine consumes oil — if the level has dropped, there is a leak, however slow.

That is why a straightforward top-up is usually a temporary measure rather than a repair. It may cool properly for a while, and then the same thing happens again. Finding and fixing the leak costs more once, and less over two years.

Ask this before agreeing to a regas. Ask where the refrigerant went. If the answer is that it does not matter, or that these systems just lose gas over time, you are being sold a recurring top-up rather than a repair.

The musty smell is almost always a different problem

A damp, musty smell when the air conditioning starts is usually not refrigerant. It comes from the evaporator, which stays wet with condensation after use, and from the drain tube that carries that water away underneath the car. If the drain is partly blocked, water sits where it should not, and the smell follows.

The same blocked drain is one of the reasons a footwell can end up wet. So if you have a smell and a damp carpet together, they may well be one fault rather than two.

Why "an AC regas every year" is a warning sign

If a workshop's answer to every cooling complaint is a regas, that tells you what they do rather than what your car needs. Regassing is a legitimate part of a repair when the system has been emptied to replace a component. It is not a maintenance item.

A car with a sound system that has not been opened should hold its refrigerant for years.

Questions this usually raises

How often does a car air conditioner need regassing?
It should not need it as routine maintenance. The system is sealed, so the refrigerant does not wear out or get used up. If it has dropped enough to affect cooling, there is a leak to find. A regas on a sealed, healthy system is not a service item.
Why is my AC cold in the morning but warm in the afternoon?
That pattern commonly points at the condenser and airflow rather than the refrigerant — the system struggles to shed heat once the ambient temperature and the traffic load rise. A condenser clogged with dust and debris behaves the same way as one that is simply overwhelmed. Checking the cabin filter and the condenser is where to start.
My AC smells musty. Does that mean it needs gas?
No. Refrigerant has no smell, so a musty smell is not a sign that the system is low. It usually comes from a damp evaporator or a partly blocked drain tube, and it is often the same root cause as water finding its way into the footwell.
