Your car after a flooded road
Bengaluru's October rain puts water across roads that are usually fine. If you drove through it, four things are worth checking — in order of what actually costs money.
The short version
What to take away
- Brake grinding the next morning is usually surface rust on the disc. It clears in three or four stops.
- Water in the floor carpet is the expensive one. It looks dry on top, and the wiring runs along the sill beside it.
- If the engine stalled in the water, do not try to restart it. That is the one instruction that matters most.
- Watch for electrical oddities over the following weeks, not just the next day.

The grinding noise the next morning
Brake discs are bare cast iron. Get them wet and they flash-rust within hours. The first few stops the next morning grind as the pads scrape that film off, and then it stops. That is normal, it is harmless, and it is not a reason to book anything.
It stops being normal if the grinding is still there a week later, or if you feel a pulsing through the brake pedal, or if the car pulls to one side when you brake. Those point at the pad or a disc that has been damaged — a different problem that happens to sound similar.
The short version. Grinding that clears within a few stops is harmless. Grinding that is still there next week is a brake job.
Lift the floor mat — this is the expensive one
Water that gets into the cabin wicks under the carpet and sits in the underlay, which is a thick layer of foam that holds moisture for a long time. The surface of the carpet feels dry within a day. Underneath it, it is not.
The reason this matters more than the brakes is what runs alongside it. The wiring loom for the rear of the car runs along the door sills, and several connectors sit low in the footwells. Corroded connectors do not announce themselves. They show up weeks later as electrical faults that are slow and awkward to trace.
- A damp or musty smell that does not clear after a few days of dry weather.
- Condensation on the inside of the glass overnight, more than the weather explains.
- A damp patch or a tidemark at the base of the door sill.
- Electrics behaving oddly — a window, a lamp, a central locking fault with no obvious cause.
Do not try to dry it with the air conditioning. The air conditioning does dry the cabin air, but it will not dry saturated underlay, which is where the water is actually sitting. Running the AC with the windows shut can make the smell worse. The carpet needs to come up so the underlay can dry properly.
Open the air filter box
If water reached the engine's air intake, the filter element will be wet. A wet paper filter restricts airflow, and a saturated one can start to break up, which is worse. It is a two-minute check and it is worth doing while the car is still damp.
If the filter is dry, water did not reach the intake, and you can stop worrying about the engine.
If the engine stalled in the water, do not restart it
This is the single most important line in this guide. Water does not compress. If water has entered a cylinder, turning the engine over — even just on the starter motor — can bend a connecting rod. What would have been a drain-and-dry becomes an engine rebuild.
The instinct to try the key again is the wrong one, and it is a strong instinct. Do not follow it. Have the car recovered, and have the intake and the cylinders checked before anyone attempts to start it.
What to watch over the following weeks
Flood damage is rarely a single event. Water displaces grease and sits in places that do not dry on their own, so some of the effects appear later.
- Wheel bearings. Water displaces the grease inside them. The symptom is a droning or humming that grows over weeks and changes with speed.
- The underbody and the sill seams. Rust starts early and is far easier to stop early.
- The gearbox and differential, if the water was deep enough to cover the breathers.
- Electrical faults from connectors that corroded quietly — these are the ones that surface a month later.
So how do you know if you got away with it?
A reasonable triage: if the carpets are dry under the mats, the brakes stopped grinding within a few stops, the air filter is dry, and nothing electrical is misbehaving — you very likely got away with it, and there is nothing to book.
If any one of those is not true, deal with that one. And if the engine stalled in the water at any point, stop and have it looked at before it is started again — that case is not a judgement call.

Questions this usually raises
- The water was only up to the wheels. Is the car fine?
- It depends where the air intake and the breathers sit on your particular car, and that varies a lot between models, so there is no fixed water line that is safe for every vehicle. Water above the centre of the wheel is worth checking rather than assuming — the four checks above take a few minutes and cover it.
- My AC smells musty since the rain. Is that related?
- Usually yes, but indirectly. Damp in the cabin and a damp evaporator both encourage the smell. It is more often about the evaporator and the drain tube than about the refrigerant, so a regas will not fix a smell. Drying the cabin out and checking that the drain is not blocked is the place to start.
- How do I know whether water got into the engine?
- A wet air filter means water reached the intake. Beyond that, it needs looking at rather than guessing — and if the engine stalled while in water, or the car was parked in water that came up high, do not start it to find out. Have it checked first.
